Portrait of Inspired by Family

Inspired by family and supported by a scholarship, Vongsri Vang ’14 is studying at UC Davis.

One of Vang’s challenges in attending college is also his greatest source of inspiration—his family.

Vang comes from a single-income family—his father works for an airplane parts manufacturer. Additionally, both his mother and one of his sisters have disabilities; assisting with their care is a part of his life as a UC Davis student.

“While my family encouraged me to attend college, I knew paying for my education was going to be all on me,” said Vang. “So I worked very hard in high school to get really good grades, which I knew would help me get to college.”

Vang graduated from high school with a 4.2 GPA and received the merit-based UC Davis Chancellor’s Achievement Award, which is supported by gifts to the UC Davis Annual Fund.

“I am so grateful for this scholarship, which helped me pay for first year expenses,” he said. “If I didn’t receive this scholarship and financial aid, I would have to work or take out loans. Thanks to this support, I don’t have that burden to carry.”

The first in his family to attend college, Vang is pursuing his undergraduate degree and has set a career goal to become a civil engineer.

“I'm motivated to discover innovations that will make construction more affordable and sustainable," Vang said. "Thanks to the Chancellor's Award, I can help my family and pursue the rigorous coursework."
