A dance craze that is sweeping the nation and will benefit sick children is coming to UC Davis for the first time.
A group of dedicated UC Davis students are hosting an inaugural Davis Dance Marathon on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the ARC Ballroom to raise $5,000 for the UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
The Davis Dance Marathon is part of a nationwide Dance Marathon movement that has inspired college students at more than 150 campuses across the country to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network hospital in their community. The inaugural, student-led Davis Dance Marathon will be an 8-hour event to celebrate the total amount of funds raised, throw a party for the kids treated by the hospital and bring awareness of philanthropy and the children’s hospital to a new generation of college students. The event involves dancing, games, live entertainment, performances, free giveaways and kids from the hospital in a fun, high-energy, healthy environment.
“We’ll have a DJ, games and prizes and dance crews will lead dances. There will also be live entertainment and plenty of group activities,” said Eddie Yoo, president of Davis Dance Marathon. “We’re hoping to spread the word about the good work that the UC Davis Children’s Hospital is doing and to encourage students and the future generations to help the hospital. It’s for a good cause and it’s free so come check it out and see what it’s all about.”
Prizes will be given to registered participants who fundraise or donate:
- $10 meal from Johnny Rockets
- $25 Davis Dance Marathon T-shirt
- $50 Opportunity Drawing
- $100 Davis Dance Marathon Survivor Package (bag of goodies)
The fundraising event is free to register and open to students and anyone from the UC Davis or Davis community. People can register in advance via the group’s website or at the door. Organizers of the event are encouraging participants to fundraise a minimum of $25 to support the cause. Donations can also be made through the event website. To date, participants are nearly two-thirds of the way toward their $5,000 goal and have raised more than $3,200 for the UC Davis Children’s Hospital.
Yoo said he and the other students involved with the Davis Dance Marathon were motivated to bring this nationally-supported fundraising effort to UC Davis to help patients of the UC Davis Children’s Hospital, some of whom they see when they volunteer throughout the year at the hospital. Three families whose children are patients at the UC Davis Children’s Hospital will be attending the first Davis Dance Marathon.
“Those kids have been through so much, but they are all full of smiles and laughter,” Yoo said. “Seeing their strength motivates me to do better and motivates everyone on our team to do what we can to help. All that we do is for them—it’s for the kids.”
